INEC postpones nationwide voter revalidation exercise

Now off the table, INEC’s countrywide voter revalidation move gets delayed. Following new plans, the process waits until beyond the 2027 General Election.
A message appeared, attached to a note bearing the name Mohammed Kudu Haruna – National Commissioner and head of INEC’s voter outreach unit. On Friday, talks unfolded in Abuja, pulling together the Commission and its regional election leads, with that plan sitting among other topics up for review.
Out of the need to tidy Nigeria’s voting list came a fresh review. This one dug into old data, swapped out wrong names or dates. Mistakes in addresses got straightened. Double listings slipped away quietly. People who were already signed up could step in to refresh what showed on paper. Ineligible ones? They did not stay long.
The exercise helps keep voter records accurate, INEC said. Yet the delay came without reason given. Instead, officials stressed their promise to run elections that are open, honest, clear, because trust matters. Still unanswered – why now wait.
Friday, 10th April 2026, brought a meeting between INEC and its Resident Electoral Commissioners. That day, talk turned to the planned nationwide voter revalidation effort. After weighing options, they agreed – hold off until beyond the 2027 General Election. Keeping the National Register of Voters accurate sits at the core of what INEC must do. Verifying current voter details forms part of that duty. Checking each entry helps weed out duplicates. Invalid registrations get cleared through this process too. Truth in data strengthens trust in the entire system. Clarity matters when building something meant to last. One goal of the activity is letting registered voters check their information, fixing mistakes if needed. Still, INEC insists on holding votes that are open, honest, and fair for everyone involved
