Julius Malema Jailed Five Years: South Africa’s Firearms Conviction

By: Abudu Olalekan

Five years locked up – that’s what Julius Malema now faces after a courtroom decision came down Thursday. A judge in South Africa delivered the ruling, shaking up the nation’s politics like an unexpected thunderclap on a quiet afternoon.

A loud voice on the far left, heading the Economic Freedom Fighters, got found guilty after acting without thinking in 2018. Out at a campaign event, he shot a military-style gun upward – right where people could see. Cameras rolling. Crowds watching. Hard to miss.

Years passed before the authorities reached him again.

Out of nowhere, Magistrate Twanet Olivier came down hard in her decision. Because Malema chose to ignore firearm rules on purpose. Not even close to being unclear – it was straight-up breaking the law. Excuses did not fit here at all.

Folks in bright red filled the streets near the courthouse, voices loud, fists maybe raised. Not just waiting – standing together, shouting in rhythm, restless. This wasn’t only about one verdict. A shift hung in the air, real and close. Nerves stretched tight. You saw it in how people stood, how they watched.

Here’s where Malema stands. Call him what you like – still, he leans into uproar like fuel. Noise follows him by design. Loudness shapes his place in politics: fierce, blunt, raw. Shooting a firearm during a public gathering? Fits right in.

Yet judges pay little mind to party labels. Five years feels like a lifetime.

Now comes the real test: will Malema do the full term, or will courts stretch it longer through delays. In this country, when politics enters the room, clear answers tend to slip away.

For sure, one detail stands out. Right from the start, politics shaped everything about this case. By Thursday, the sentencing poured fuel on already burning tensions.

Out on the sidewalks, folks are moving fast, voices rising before the EFF even speaks. This won’t fade quietly – not with energy like that already in motion.
