Obi, Kwankwaso step into NDC, collect membership cards as 2027 politics heats up

It was a short meeting. Closed doors. Tight security.

Then the doors opened — and the applause followed.

Peter Obi and Musa Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), picking up their membership cards on Sunday evening in a move that could shake up calculations ahead of 2027.

Obi, former Anambra governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, stood beside Kwankwaso, the ex-Kano governor who flew the NNPP flag in the last presidential race. Different paths before. Same room now.

Supporters cheered as the two men were formally received into the party. It felt symbolic. Maybe strategic too.

They were welcomed by Seriake Dickson, former Bayelsa governor and now national leader of the NDC. Smiles. Handshakes. Cameras flashing.

The defection comes after both men parted ways with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adding another twist to Nigeria’s already shifting opposition landscape. Alliances are forming. Old loyalties, loosening. Everyone seems to be testing the waters before 2027 fully comes into view.

For now, it’s just membership cards. Simple plastic. But politically, it may mean much more. Or maybe not. Time will tell.
