Pentagon Escalates Alert: Israeli Intelligence Accused of Targeting US Officials

By: Abudu Olalekan

The Pentagon’s basically sounding the alarm right now. According to NBC News, the Defense Intelligence Agency just bumped Israel’s threat level to “critical”—the highest it goes. And that’s a big deal.

Here’s what’s happening. The DIA apparently got spooked by what it sees as increasingly aggressive Israeli intelligence operations aimed squarely at senior US government officials. We’re not talking about routine intelligence gathering. This is something that’s got people in the intelligence community genuinely worried.

Two current officials and one former official spilled the details to NBC. The assessment dropped recently—within the last few weeks. And it’s specific. Real specific. The DIA put together a seven-page document breaking down exactly what incidents triggered this “critical” designation. That’s not casual concern. That’s documented, detailed alarm.

What’s Really Going On

So why now? The timing matters. There’s tension between Trump and Netanyahu. Serious tension. The disagreements center on Iran—specifically whether the Trump administration’s planning major military strikes against Iran or if they’ll try negotiating instead. Israel wants answers. And apparently, they’re not asking nicely.

“They are exceedingly interested in what we are up to,” Emily Harding, VP of Defense and Security at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told the outlet. She called Israel’s intelligence service “hyper-aggressive.” That’s code for: they’re coming at this hard.

The real fear? Israel’s trying to peek inside Trump’s inner circle. They want to know what conversations are happening behind closed doors about Iran policy, Lebanon operations, the whole Middle East chess game. And they’re willing to push boundaries to find out.

Everyone’s Denying It

But here’s where it gets messy. The Israeli Embassy in Washington came out swinging. “Completely false,” they said. Israel doesn’t spy on US officials. Full stop. They’re not having it.

The Pentagon? They stayed quiet. No comment. The White House did the same thing—called the story “false” but didn’t elaborate.

That silence says something though. If this was totally made up, wouldn’t they come out with more? Instead, we get bare denials while the intelligence community’s apparently running around with their threat assessments maxed out on Israel.

The Bigger Picture

Here’s the thing nobody’s saying out loud: allies spy on allies all the time. It happens. But bumping a country to “critical threat” status? That’s escalation. That means something shifted. Either the behavior got way more aggressive, or someone finally decided to take it seriously.

Emily Harding’s comment about Israel being “hyper-aggressive” isn’t new information to people who follow this stuff. But having the Pentagon formally acknowledge it? That’s different. That’s making it official.

The real question now is what comes next. Does this change how the US treats Israeli intelligence requests? Does it affect military aid? Does Trump push back on his relationship with Netanyahu? Those answers will tell you whether this report actually matters or if it’s just noise in a relationship between allies that’s always been complicated.

For now, the Pentagon’s got Israel at the top of its counterintelligence watch list. And that’s not something you get without serious cause.
