Suspect dies after alleged attempt to grab soldier’s rifle during arrest in Enugu
What began as a routine response to a distress call ended in tragedy on Tuesday in Enugu State.
A man arrested by troops of Operation UDO KA lost his life after an altercation with a soldier during questioning. It happened around 10:15 a.m. along the busy 9th Mile–Enugu Road in Udi Local Government Area. Things escalated quickly.
According to security sources, troops attached to the 103 Battalion (Rear) at Ugwu Onyema had responded to reports of a tipper driver allegedly causing a disturbance along the highway. The man was located, arrested and taken to a nearby military facility for preliminary questioning.
But the situation didn’t stay calm for long.
Sources said the suspect suddenly became aggressive while in custody and got into a physical struggle with one of the soldiers. During the confrontation, he allegedly tried to seize the soldier’s rifle. In the confusion that followed, a shot was fired.
The suspect sustained gunshot injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, medical personnel later confirmed he had died.
After the incident, security was tightened across the area. Troops increased patrols and reinforced their presence to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order.
As of the time this report was filed, the military had not released an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident. So, many questions still remain unanswered while authorities are yet to publicly comment on what happened.
