The newsroom is quieter today. One familiar voice missing.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has expressed shock over the passing of Layi Olanrewaju, the Kwara State Correspondent of The Sun Newspapers. The news, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), came on February 13, 2026, after a brief illness.
In a statement released in Ilorin by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor extended condolences to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kwara, particularly the Correspondents’ Chapel, as well as to the management of The Sun and Olanrewaju’s immediate family.
He described the late journalist as a veteran. Not just in years, but in impact. A media unionist who spent decades reporting, mentoring, and standing up for colleagues’ welfare. The kind of journalist who didn’t just file stories, but built relationships.
For many in Kwara’s media circle, Olanrewaju was more than a correspondent. He was steady. Present. Always around.
The governor prayed for comfort for the grieving family and asked that God grant the deceased eternal rest.
Another byline gone. Another chapter closed.
