Heads Up: Maryland Independence Bridge to Close Partly for 4 Nights — Lagos Govt Says Plan Ahead

So, here’s the deal. Lagos State Government just dropped a heads-up for drivers. The Maryland Independence Bridge? Yeah, it’s getting some emergency repairs. The wall and expansion joints need fixing — no ifs, no buts.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced on Thursday that the work will happen over four nights — from Saturday, August 16 to Tuesday, August 19, 2025. But here’s the catch: it’s only between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. each night. Late-night hustle, basically.
If you’re driving inbound from Oshodi, Ojuelegba, Stadium, or Lagos, listen up. You won’t be able to use the main carriageway. Instead, you’ll be diverted at Maria Lodge in Maryland, then onto the Maryland Bridge, connecting to Idiroko and inwards to Anthony before you continue your trip. It’s a bit of a detour, but necessary.
Good news for those coming from Ketu or Ikorodu towards Lagos, Stadium, or Anthony — your route stays open, no disruptions there.
Osiyemi promised traffic officers will be on the ground to keep things moving and reduce the usual chaos. He also asked drivers to follow their instructions — you know, to avoid turning the night into a nightmare.
“The partial closure is part of the plan to get the bridge fixed up right,” Osiyemi said. So, plan your trips, expect some changes, and stay safe out there.
