One-Term Presidency: Aisha Yesufu Says Peter Obi Is Committed
By: Abudu Olalekan
Aisha Yesufu sees something rare in Peter Obi – something that reminds her of Nelson Mandela. Not power hunger, but a quiet dedication to purpose shapes his path. Office means less than impact; staying put matters far less than stepping back when needed. Her words come fast, sharp: should he reach for another term, resistance will rise beside him. This isn’t loyalty without limits – it’s support with boundaries drawn clear.
On Monday while appearing on Arise TV, Aisha Yesufu claimed she received a clear promise from Peter Obi following the 2023 presidential race – a pledge mirroring what he had stated back in 2022. Should he attempt staying beyond a single term once elected, her resistance would be total. “He made a commitment,” she declared. That personal vow binds her response. No room for compromise exists if he steps back on it. Her words carried weight because of that earlier assurance. Anything more than one tenure would trigger her full pushback. Integrity hinges on keeping promises, in her view. So defiance becomes inevitable under those conditions. She stood firm saying: breaking it awakens opposition from within her core.
Yesufu recalled how surprising she found the idea at first. “In 2022, when he was saying that, I told him, sir, please – you can’t be serious. You can’t say you’ll do one term and move on.” But after the election, she demanded clarity: “I need your word on this. I know you said it before – I want you to repeat it. Is it true you’ll do just one term?”
Obi’s reply, according to her, was simple and firm: “Aisha, I told you even in 2023, and I still mean it. Because I’m putting my name on the line. I don’t joke with my name, or my integrity. When I say something, I mean it.” That, she says, convinced her he’ll keep his pledge.
To Yesufu, this isn’t just a line made up for votes. Leadership means caring more about the country than staying in power. Look at figures such as Lee Kuan Yew and Mandela – they created legacies beyond their time in office. Knowing your run ends lets choices come from what helps everyone, not just those holding ballots later on
One day, folks might tell stories about Obi like he lit a fire under Nigeria’s future, provided he keeps his word. Years could pass. Even generations. Still, her guess is he’ll come through. That belief sticks.
