Why Xavi Says It Will Never Happen Under Laporta

Well, there goes that dream. For good, apparently.
Xavi Hernandez just dropped a bombshell that’s going to sting Barcelona fans right where it hurts. The former Barca manager has basically shut the door – slammed it shut, actually – on any hopes of Lionel Messi ever wearing the Blaugrana jersey again. And the reason? It’s not what most people think.
Speaking to La Vanguardia, Xavi didn’t mince words. “Leo Messi is never coming back to Barcelona, because Laporta doesn’t want that.” Just like that. No sugarcoating, no diplomatic language. Straight to the point.
Joan Laporta. The club president. He’s the one blocking it.
Now, this is where things get interesting because the narrative we’ve all been fed over the years has been different, hasn’t it? LaLiga’s financial regulations got the blame. Messi’s salary demands were supposedly too high. The timing wasn’t right. Barcelona’s books were a mess. We heard every excuse in the book.
But Xavi’s saying something else entirely. According to him, LaLiga didn’t block Messi’s potential return at all. And Messi’s camp? They didn’t demand more money either. None of that was the real problem.
The problem is Laporta himself doesn’t want Messi back at Camp Nou.
Let that sink in for a second.
This is the same Laporta who oversaw Messi’s departure back in August 2021. That summer was brutal for Barca fans. Everyone thought a deal would get done. Messi wanted to stay. The fans were desperate for him to stay. Then suddenly, there he was at a press conference, crying, saying goodbye. It was heartbreaking to watch.
The official story back then was that both camps couldn’t agree on a contract extension. Financial Fair Play regulations from LaLiga made it impossible, they said. Barcelona’s wage bill was out of control. Something had to give.
Messi left as a free agent. Just like that, the greatest player in Barcelona’s history walked out the door for nothing. He ended up at Paris Saint-Germain, which felt wrong from day one. Messi in a PSG shirt never looked quite right, did it?
His time in Paris was… fine. Not spectacular, not terrible. Just fine. Then he made the move to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, where he’s been tearing up the league and seemingly enjoying his football again.
Throughout all of this, there’s been speculation. Whispers. Hope. Maybe one day Messi could return to Barcelona for a farewell season. A proper sendoff. Give the fans closure. Let him retire where he belongs.
Xavi’s comments suggest that’s never happening. Not under Laporta’s presidency anyway.
The former Barcelona midfielder and manager would know better than most. He was there in the trenches, working with the board, dealing with the politics. If anyone has inside knowledge about how Laporta operates and what he’s thinking, its Xavi.
What’s really fascinating is Xavi’s insistence that the typical excuses don’t hold water. He’s specifically saying LaLiga wasn’t the obstacle. Messi’s salary demands weren’t the issue. Which means the reasons are personal, political, or both.
Maybe Laporta doesn’t want to admit he made a mistake letting Messi go. Maybe there’s bad blood we don’t know about. Maybe he thinks moving on completely is better for the club’s future. Who knows?
What we do know is this – Barcelona fans who’ve been holding onto hope need to let it go. Messi’s not coming back. Not now, probably not ever.
The fairy tale ending isn’t happening.
Reportersroom will continue following this story as more details emerge about the relationship between Messi, Laporta, and Barcelona. But for now, Xavi’s made one thing crystal clear. The door isn’t just closed. It’s locked from the inside.
