Gullies tearing through Abia and Imo. Homes gone. Farms swallowed. People displaced. South-East neighbors battling back hard.
Start in Abia. SEMA boss Dr. Sunday Jackson lays it out in Umuahia chat. “We’re one of the worst hit.” Sites everywhere across zones. NiMet and NIHSA warn: High flood risk, 33 states including us. More rain? More gullies.
Gov Alex Otti’s moving fast – remediation at Ossah, Umuahia North, others. But Jackson’s real: Farmlands vanishing, houses too. Displaced folks piling up. “SEMA’s on security, awareness. Can’t shoulder it alone though.” Teaming with NEMA, Environment Ministry for flood alerts in hot spots. Downscaling exercises to warn folks. Ignore it? Lives lost. Property trashed. Degradation.
Locals back him. Dr. Kenneth Anyalechi, ex-Ozuitem Development Union prez in Bende LGA: Topography’s killer. Nine communities, 100 villages. Umuikwuoma-Ndiambe, others cut off. Self-help in 2021? Over in Imo. Environment Comm Major Emenike in Owerri: 2026 budget targets it. High-risk spots wrecked roads, markets, homes. Orlu, Okigwe zones worst – Ideato North/South, Njaba, Orlu, Mbaitolu. 15-20 sites prioritized: Akpulu, Umuaka, Owerri corridors. Plus state-led: Ugiri-ike, Inyishi, more.
Fed collab via NEWMAP/EIB on six big ones, like Izombe, Ezinihitte. Nekede underway, Craneburg building. “Damage huge – beyond environment. Umuchima roads, houses, markets gone.” Cost tallying up. Funds for reclaim and road rebuilds. Displaced? Waiting official requests.
Early warnings? Drains de-silting with Imo Rural Roads. “Trash in drains? Big no. Rainy season’s knocking.”
NEMA’s Imo ops head Nnamdi Igwe amps it: Ideato belt, Orlu, Obowo, Owerri parts crushed. Swallowed homes, farms, roads. Schools, clinics cut off. Uhuala Obibi Ochasi: 2km gully, 75m deep, 100m wide. 20+ houses vanished. Ghost town now.
Obowo’s Umuokeh, 14 towns: Threatens Umuahia-Owerri highway. Chaos if it breaks. More: Nekede, Umueze-Obazu-Mbieri, etc. Human cost? Staggering.
LGA guy Chidi: Uhuala – 20 homes submerged, hundreds homeless. Ideato: 30 lost by ’23, more coming. Farms gone for kms, trade dead. Billions damaged. “State, fed help now. Engineering fixes.”
Folks hope governments speed up. Rains coming. Act fast.
