Journalist Claims Police Detained Him After Exposing Bank MD’s Affair With His Wife

It started online. Then it ended up in a cell.
Nura Distin, a journalist in Yobe, says he’s been thrown behind bars because he spoke up about the Managing Director of Yobe Microfinance Bank, Sheriff Almuhajir. The accusation? That Almuhajir was having a romantic thing with Distin’s wife. She works at the bank.
Things got heated fast.
Distin took to social media to spill the details. He claimed the relationship wasn’t new, saying it started before they even got married and continued after. He also alleged that while this was going on, Almuhajir used his position to promote his wife to branch manager. Pretty convenient, if true. To back it up, Distin posted screenshots of chats. But here’s the thing—when Reportersroom checked his profiles, the materials were gone. Deleted.
Almuhajir isn’t just any bank executive. He’s known to be close to Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni. A loyalist.
According to Distin, the marriage collapsed because of the affair. But when he made it public, the backlash was immediate. He says Almuhajir pulled strings using political connections to retaliate. Officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Damaturu called him in for questioning. That was June 30.
He showed up peacefully. “I have been invited by the police, and I will honor the invitation peacefully and with a clear conscience,” Distin wrote on Facebook at the time. He talked about truth. Integrity.
But he didn’t come back out free.
Distin alleges he was held for four days before being remanded in prison. He claims the bank CEO organizes unnecessary workshops just so his wife can travel with him. Spend time together under the guise of work.
Even after the arrest, Distin wasn’t backing down. In a post after reporting to the police, he said, “We have done S.I.D Damaturu, we shall return by the grace of God.”
He made it clear he wasn’t scared. “I was born to face fear, not to run from it.”
His stance was firm. Money couldn’t change his principles, and neither will intimidation. He warned against misusing the law to pressure people. He promised to pursue everything through lawful means.
The arrest has stirred up reactions. Supporters are speaking out. His last Facebook updates were around Tuesday, June 30, before things went quiet.
Sirdeeq Jagaban, a businessman and friend, condemned the detention. He called for Distin’s release immediately. “Nura Distin is my friend, and he is someone who knows the value of elders,” Jagaban wrote. He described Distin as an advocate for justice and community progress.
Jagaban argued there was no reason for an arrest without due process. “We will not sit back and watch them trying to intimidate our youths,” he added. Because they are calling for justice.
His final message was simple. “Free Nura Distin.”
In another post, Jagaban prayed for him. Urging supporters not to get discouraged by what happened. The situation remains tense.
