Women Senate Candidates 2027: Natasha, Iyabo Obasanjo, 121 Others Join Senate Race
By: Abudu Olalekan
Women Senate Candidates 2027 are making a notable showing on the list of aspirants for Nigeria’s 109 Senate seats, with 123 women among the 1,303 candidates listed for the election.
The names were contained in the final candidate list released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, ahead of the polls.
It is still a small number compared to the total field. But it’s a start.
The women are running on the platforms of several political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, APC; Peoples Democratic Party, PDP; African Democratic Congress, ADC; Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC; Labour Party, LP, and others.
Some familiar names stand out. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is seeking another term in Kogi Central on the PDP platform, while Senator Ireti Kingibe is contesting in the FCT under the ADC.
Former Ogun State senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, is also in the race on the PDP platform. In Lagos West, former Lagos Deputy Governor, Idiat Oluranti Adebule, will fly the APC flag.
Former senator Nkechi Nwaogu is seeking the Abia Central seat under the NDC.
The 2027 contest will shape the next Senate, with women candidates spread across states and the Federal Capital Territory. Some are aiming for a return to the National Assembly. Others are stepping into the race for the first time.
