Reforms are behind us; prosperity is next, Remi Tinubu tells Nigerians

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu says President Bola Tinubu believes Nigeria is moving from a period of economic reforms into one of prosperity.

She delivered the message on Saturday at an All Progressives Congress (APC) women’s empowerment rally in Enugu, organised by the party’s Women Mobilisation Directorate. The rally also called for her husband’s re-election.

Speaking partly in Nigerian Pidgin, she said: “He say make I tell una say we don do reforms, na prosperity we dey now.”

Mrs Tinubu acknowledged that people had waited for economic improvements. She compared the wait to a pregnancy, saying the country was now “pushing into prosperity” and that the worst was over.

She also highlighted the empowerment programmes held at the rally, asking attendees whether they had seen other campaign events that included similar initiatives. “We know they talk, talk, talk and talk alone,” she said, adding that she had heard the crowd’s call for leaders to “talk and do.”

The First Lady said she had visited the South-East several times since her husband became president and had been following developments in the region. She assured women in the audience that she would continue supporting them and outlined planned assistance for women and older people.

According to Mrs Tinubu, 250 women would each receive ₦200,000 to start a business. She also announced plans for a programme for older women on December 17, saying 750 women across the Igbo states would benefit from the initiatives. She said another empowerment event was planned for December 3, in connection with World Disability Day.

Mrs Tinubu said she had been given the strength to continue the work and urged attendees to support her husband and other APC candidates in the January 16 election. She called on voters to back the party’s candidates for the Senate, House of Representatives, governorships and state assemblies.

She also challenged the crowd to name empowerment programmes organised by other presidential candidates.
