VIERAA Launches Eco-Club in Lagos Schools, Promotes Climate Change Education Among Students
By: Abudu Olalekan
Visionary Initiatives for Educational Revitalization and Advancement (VIERAA), a Nigerian non-governmental organisation focused on education and climate change, has launched its VIERAA Eco-Club initiative in schools in Lagos State as part of its efforts to promote climate-change awareness and environmental education among young people.
The Eco-Club programme begins today, October 2, 2026, with activities taking place at Great Mentor School and JJUPERQS Schools, both located in Agbado-Oke-Odo LCDA, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The initiative is designed to help students understand climate change and environmental issues in simple, practical ways while encouraging them to develop responsible habits and become positive voices for environmental protection in their schools, homes and communities.
For VIERAA, the Eco-Club is an extension of its broader commitment to education. The organisation’s work focuses particularly on the reintegration of out-of-school children into formal education and the promotion of climate-change education and awareness among children and young people.
Through the Eco-Club, students will be introduced to issues including climate change, pollution, waste management, flooding, environmental cleanliness and the importance of protecting natural resources. The programme will also encourage students to take practical steps within their immediate environment.About VIERAA
Visionary Initiatives for Educational Revitalization and Advancement (VIERAA) is a Nigerian non-governmental organisation focused on education and child development. Its work includes efforts to support the reintegration of out-of-school children into formal education and to promote climate-change education and environmental awareness among children and young people.
Speaking on the launch, VIERAA said the initiative reflects its belief that education should prepare children not only for academic success but also to understand and respond to the challenges affecting their communities.
“Climate change is no longer an issue that young people will encounter only in the future. They are already growing up in a world affected by flooding, pollution, extreme weather and other environmental challenges. We want to give them the knowledge and confidence to understand these issues and play their part in creating solutions.”
The Eco-Club will provide opportunities for students to participate in environmental activities, discussions, awareness campaigns and other school-based initiatives. VIERAA also intends to work with participating schools to encourage students to share the knowledge they acquire with their peers, families and communities.
The launch at Great Mentor School and JJUPERQS Schools marks the beginning of the organisation’s planned expansion of the Eco-Club programme to other schools in Lagos and to Nigeria at large.
VIERAA believes that reaching children through schools provides an important opportunity to build environmental awareness early and encourage a generation of young people who are better informed about the relationship between education, their communities and the environment.
