He finally said it.

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed the 2026 FIFA World Cup is going to be his last. The Portugal captain spoke to reporters on Sunday, just ahead of the Round of 16 clash against Spain. He’s 41 now. Time flies.

“It’s about enjoying it as much as possible,” Ronaldo said.

He looked relaxed despite the pressure. “This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game,” he added.

Anyone following his career knows he’s given everything. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner insisted he’ll step away from international football with no regrets. Whatever happens tomorrow, he’s clear.

“The day will come [when I retire from international football]. But I’ll be honest: whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience—100%, no, 1,000%. Because I’ve given everything in football,” he said.

Its not about proving anything anymore. He’s got a good life. It’s purely passion now.

“I don’t need it; I have a good life, but it’s about passion. I play football because I love it… You have to enjoy every day. And I’ve scored three goals at this World Cup. I’m not doing too badly, right?”

He was smiling when he said that. And honestly, he isnt doing badly.

Reportersroom gathered that the Portuguese star has enjoyed another memorable campaign across the United States, Canada and Mexico. He became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups after netting twice against Uzbekistan in the group stage. That’s a record. He also scored from the penalty spot against Croatia in the Round of 32. His first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match.

Reflecting on the tournament, the former Manchester United forward described it as the most emotionally rewarding World Cup of his career.

“It’s been fantastic. It goes beyond the pitch. This is the World Cup I’ll remember the most because of people’s passion. It’s even more this time; I don’t know why. It’s been, emotionally, the best. I’ve enjoyed it very much,” he said.

People always ask about the trophy. Does he need it to complete the legacy?

Ronaldo says no.

Despite never having won the FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo said his legacy would not be defined by whether he lifts the trophy.

“I’m not lacking anything in life. I’m not going to be more or less Cristiano because I win the World Cup. We have the qualities to win, but only one country can win it. Age gives you maturity and experience,” he said.

He’s under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr until 2027. But even with all the success, he thanked the critics. Said it helped him grow.

“I’m thankful even for the attacks I receive, turning 40 — and I hope to live another 40 years — with the criticism, that’s how you grow the most as a person, and I thank you, journalists, for that,” he said.

Thats the thing about Ronaldo. Always moving forward. Even at the end, he’s grateful.
